Rudee Report 26May2013 (TKAA CLUB MEETING MAY)

Today was the May meeting of TKAA. Woke up around 7AM and packed the car, arrived at the boat launch only to realize I left my Seat and my PFD. I had a backup in my Trident but way to uncomfortable. Anyway, I got my gear unloaded and met Joe and Tom for the first time. Kind of funny meeting people that you talk to online. We had maybe 20 club members out on the water and a ton of boaters and other Yakkers as well. A bunch of Googans lined the Rail as usual. I stayed until around 12:45ish and had to call it quits. Not much was going on, rail guys were catching dink flounder on cut bait. Heard of a couple people catching a few keeper sized flounder and reds but not much else. I ended up catching a 10 and 8 inch flounder. Even if I didn't catch a ton of fish it was still a blast to meet everyone and have a nice day out on the water. Also got a cool little video of some Fish Fry as they were swimming under my Yak.

Owner Ultrahead Jigheads

So just to let you all know these are the HOOKS to get and the brand to use. OWNER kicks some serious butt. I just wanted to mention these and review them for you to give you some help choosing a Flounder jighead. These are the 3/8oz Owner Ultrahead Football style jig head with a 1/0 owner hook.

The hook is incredibly sharp and maintains that razor sharp point over time and many uses. I have never seen the hook rust at all. The bonus is that these are all unpainted so you can paint your own.

In all honest these is the best type of jig in my opinion to use while Flounder fishing. Match this jig head with a Pink, White or Chartreuse Gulp Swim Mullet or Shrimp and you are going to take them out!!!

I caught all of these with the above mention rig in addition to about 7 more and not once did the hook slip. I know this isn't a major review like a rod or reel but trust me when I tell you this is the perfect size/weight and action for the flatties.

Good luck and Tight Lines!!!!

Flounder Are Here!

Epic Trip!!!!

I had a tough time trying to decide where to fish today. Was I to fish HRBT? Or would I hit Rudee? The thought of a possible citation blue hit me so I hit Rudee with some big lures. I launched out of Owls Creek Boat Launch and started trolling a X-Rap Saltwater SXR14 Spotted Minnow and a Yo-Zuro Crystal Minnow. I didn't get  a hit on the troll but anchored up about 100 yards past the grass leaving the launch. I heaved the Spotted Minnow and started reeling in like mad. Bam!!! Fish On!!! I reel in a nice 19 Inch Blue.

Not what I'm looking for. I'm going for the big 30 inch+ boys. Another cast and fish on, 18 inch this time. This happened for the next half hour but nothing bigger than that 19 incher.

The blues were only hitting Spotted Minnow and ignoring the Crystal. Started to get slow so I start trolling around for the next 45 minutes enjoying the scenery and weather. Plus it was a good workout. Nothing really biting so I start heading toward the islands. Try for some trout and drum using a 3/8 oz Owner football head and Chartreuse Gulp!. Not a bite for the next 30 minutes. What the hell is going on?
I get to the rail and nothing for 15 minutes. I throw a white gulp swim mullet and start cranking out flounder one after another for the next 45 minutes. It was kind of funny since I only saw 2 flounder pulled in by others. I think I had about 8 during this time but all of them dinks (8-13 inch). Next cast turned into some heavy pullage. Reel in a nice 16.5 inch,  about 10 minutes later another 16.5 inch reeled in.

About 20 minutes go by and another 2 dinks reeled in. Fun but I want another keeper for the plate. Made a couple casts with no hits and about to head in when I feel that familiar nibble. I let the hook rest for a 4 count and yank that mofos lip off. Nice fish on right off the bat. This one was  shaking his head and trying for dear life to get off the hook but those Owner hooks are sharp as hell. Finally get the fish to the boat and am rewarded with a nice 19 inch flounder for dinner.

Overall it was an awesome day. Brought home 3 Nice keeper flounder 16.5,16.5 and 19.I cant wait to go out again. Thanks for checking out the blog and if you like the posts be sure to subscribe and follow.

Fishing Report: Rudee Inlet 09MAY13

I headed out to Rudee Inlet yesterday around 4 PM  got to the launch at owls creek around 4:45 and in the water at 5. I knew I was only going to be in the water for a couple hours since I didn't have my VISIpole but that was fine. I was targeting Specks for the TKAA May tournament but couldn't get anything to bite. Started throwing a Rapala Saltwater X-Rap Glass Ghost. Had a nice hit and it took to the surface! Started reeling it in and he didn't like that at all. The drag started screaming on my Battle 2000. Got em to the boat and I was surprised it was only a 16 inch blue.

16 Inch Blue

Damn alright, so the blues are in. I switched to a Battle 4000 on my Allegiance Rod and threw out a Yo-Zuri Crystal Minnow (Red/White). This is my go to lure from Blues and Specks to Big ole' Striper. By far my favorite crank-bait. Upon switching to the Crystal Minnow I landed 5 nice fish in the 16-20 inch range. All the sudden BAM!!! Hooked up. This brute was going straight down and rod bent. I couldn't figure out what it was. It was a slow and stead pull like a nice size drum, no head-shakes or "freakouts" like blues do. I got it close to the boat and saw it. A NICE SIZED BLUE, my biggest blue to date and biggest of the year. Got it up to the boat after a couple attempts and finally landed it. 26.75 inches or 27 I like to say lol.

It was a gorgeous day and freaking good time to be out. Mind you the bugs and mosquitoes are out in force so be sure to bring some big spray. Now that the weather is getting warmer im sure everything is going to heat up. Tight Lines!!!!

Equipment Essentials

So I have been seen a lot of people asking "What do I need to kayak fish?" Well here we are I put together the basics of what is needed to kayak fish on this post. I will have another soon with additional items that I use. Mind you, these are what I believe to be the essentials and some of which are required. So here we go.

First off you will need a Kayak (DUH!!!) I have an Ocean Kayak Trident 13. There are many different brands and distributors  I prefer the Trident 13 but there are a lot of people that have Hobies, Wilderness Systems and so on. All about the preference and what you want to do. Kayaks come in all colors and sizes so be sure to choose wisely.

Next up We have your life vest (PFD) and whistle, the whistle in this picture is the little orange thing. These two are required to have when Kayak fishing per the Coast Guard. There are many different types of PDF's and sound devices but these are what I use. By the way, PFD stands for Personal Flotation Device. This one is the ExtraSport Osprey Fishing Vest.

We have the Kayak Paddles next, which are a must since I doubt you will get far without one. This paddle came with my kayak but you can usually get three different types. First are the Aluminum ones, then ya got the Fiberglass and last and most expensive is the carbon fiber. The aluminum ones are the cheapest but also the heaviest. I haven't had a problem with my fiberglass one which is pictured below. Carbon fiber is the lightest, most durable but usually cost a pretty penny.

Another item that is required to have by the Coast Guard (during the night) is a boat light. This wonderful item is the VisiPole 2 by Yak Attack. This sweet light has a Scotty mount on the bottom and a bright long lasting LED light on top. You can also attach a flag to the top where the light is. I highly recommend this one or the Visicarbon Pro.

VISIPole 2

Seats are optional but your arse is gonna hurt after a few hours. This is the standard seat that came with the Trident 13.

Need a stringer to keep your fish on. I usually have a stringer during the winter and spring months. Then I have a cooler for summer time when it gets hot.

Going to need a Measuring device to make sure you are legally catching fish. If you click the picture it will link to my review of this awesome tool.
Hawg Trough

Sometimes it gets rough out on the water. I love the trident since it has the rod pod to stow your belongings and keep them dry. I use this dry bag just in case to make sure nothing gets wet or to even stow water and snacks. Just toss everything in the sac roll it up and snap it together and we are good to go! This particular model is the Sealine Kodiak Sac

Dry bag

During those windy days its going to be tough to stay in one place. That is what the anchor is for. Usually you can get away with a 1.5lb grapple style anchors. This one in particular is a 5 lber. Anchors come in different sizes and types so check them out and see which one you like best.

Anchor with about 30 ft of rope

This little guy is my Otter box dry box. I use it to put my keys, wallet and cell phone in. Much easier than having to stow in the dry bag and rummage around to find. I usually leave my phone in here and just toss on my Bluetooth while paddling. As some people have commented it it is wise to have a waterproof cell phone case just in case.

For those night fishing days you are going to need some light to help. This is the head lamp that will get it done. Small takes 2 AAA batteries and has three 4 different modes. This guy will help you light your way during the pitch black nights.

Definitely going to need a fishing pole or four when out fishing. Not to mention lures, tackle, etc....
Im partial to Penn, specifically as you can see their Battle Series of Reels.

Penn Battles 2000-4000

Last but not least I always keep a knife with me. This one in particular is my dive knife. I usually strap to my leg during the summer or my waders during the winter.

Another Item I do not have listed just yet is a VHF radio. Preferably, a submersible, just in case it goes overboard. I have on shipped on the way so I will update this post when I get it. Also thanks to all who commented. You are right I forgot to mention that layers are essential! During the summer make sure you have enough protection from the sun. During the winter you must dress enough to keep you warm and be prepared even if you go overboard. Last of all dont forget the snacks and water! Dont know how many times a Power Bar and the water saved me lol.

Thanks to all who contributed!
